Rotary Service Above Self Scholarship Program
The Fort Payne Rotary Club annually boards and selects a deserving High School senior from across all school systems in DeKalb County, AL for a $4,000 scholarship toward the institution of higher learning of their choice. Applicants are asked to describe, in 150 words or less, how and when any family or personal experiences have affected their achievement in school, at work or in any school endeavor. They are also are boarded on a 250-word essay explaining how they want to impact our world, country, community for the better; as our Rotarians learn what they really want to accomplish.
22 Jun 21: Rotarian John Mathieu hosted The Fort Payne Rotary Club’s Scholarship Recipient Taylor Camp during their Tuesday meeting. Taylor expressed her love of sports during high school, and how lessons learned on the softball field greatly influenced her overall success as a student athlete. Besides being an outstanding left fielder and 3rd baseman for the Wildcats, Taylor also excelled in weight lifting during her tenure at Fort Payne High School, culminating in an Alabama State Championship. Taylor plans on attending Northeast Alabama Community College in the fall, with eventual follow-on plans to Jacksonville State University for her Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) Program
The Fort Payne Rotary Club annually funds and administers applications for students at Fort Payne High School to attend RYLA at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, NASA, Huntsville, AL.
11 Feb 20: Club President David Allgood hosted Fort Payne High School student Arturo Rodriguez-Lopez, who had just completed the Rotary Youth Leadership Academy. A junior at FPHS interested in majoring in physics, engineering, or math, Arturo relayed that the course, conducted over 2 days at Huntsville’s Space and Rocket Center, was extremely beneficial and provided him unique insight into careers in these disciplines.
Dictionary Program
Fort Payne Rotary Club purchases hard-copy dictionaries and delivers to all 3rd grade students across all public-school systems in DeKalb County, Alabama.
